Our Estate - some old photos
OUR ESTATE
If anyone has old photos of the estate we’d love to add them to our collection here on the website so everyone can see them. We don’t mind if they have people in them – did anybody spot the lady in the window of the Honeybun Farmhouse above? – I wonder who she was, maybe the farmer’s wife? What about the little lass on the bicycle in Lascelles Avenue, not such a safe place for a peddle with today’s traffic!
The Honeybun estate was one of Harrow's first council estates, built not long after the Great War of 1914-18. Built between 1921 & 23, the estate was conceived as a 'Garden Suburb' type estate and as you can see from the aerial pictures below, rather a different shape. The original estate consisted of a principal road, Lascelles Avenue, with two crescents, Hawkins & Charles and two small closes, Wood & Ford Close. The estate roads of Bowen Road(upper end only) & Marshall Close were originally on the larger part of Marshalls allotments. Where Pool Road, & Farmborough Close now sit, was the Charles Crescent or Harrow Swimming Pool. Older resdidents will remember the pool with great fondness and it has been truly missed every summer since it was sold off by the Council in the early 1980's. The mid-1970's saw the biggest changes to the estate when the older houses were either 'modernised' or flattened to make way for new style town-houses, terraces & flats. These were added to various parts of the estate and the street plan was drastically altered.
It would great if people could send us stories of their experience of living on the Honeybun, especially older residents who might give us a trip down memory lane. We’d like to hear from folk who’ve moved in more recently too; tell us why you like living here, or even if you don’t! More pictures will appear as & when we can find them.
